The old Medina of Fes — built in Morocco, shipped flat in two containers, and reassembled inside a Dutch national museum.

The brief
For the exhibition ZieZo Marokko, the National Museum of World Cultures wanted visitors to walk into Fes rather than look at photographs of it. We worked with the museum’s architect and its project lead, Liesbet Ruben, to build a detailed model of the old Medina.
The work
Two kinds of sourcing ran in parallel. New elements — furniture, tiles, textiles — were made by our master artisan partners to the architect’s drawings. Authentic vintage pieces were found and brought back into condition, because some things cannot be made new without looking new.
The whole build was engineered as boxed panels so that a museum team could assemble it on site without us. It shipped in two containers.
Their expertise in Moroccan craftsmanship and seamless coordination with local artisans ensured that every element — furniture, tiles, textiles — was authentic and beautifully made.
